The correct answer is spatial disorientation. Stand on one foot, put one hand over one eye. Your peripheral vision in your uncovered eye should allow you to stay balanced. Now look through the ATD with your uncovered eye. Without input from your peripheral vision you will have a very difficult time staying balanced. The exercise demonstrates how your brain uses several sensory inputs to establish which way is up, not just your inner ear. I thought it was the "look at me" horn... I imagine when the students get fiesty you stand all stoically and press your lips to the horn and blow a raspberry. I also like the telescope answer. It's a MFD Multi Function Device!
